Jane Ridgewood

Another Tea Addicted Writer On The Loose!

It’s October 01st and officially Preptober time. We have one month until NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) begins again! In case you haven’t heard of it before, NaNoWriMo occurs annually in the month of November. Writers from across the globe join in (for free) and participate in the challenge of writing out 50,000 words in 30 days. These words typically are towards your new novel. I have participated and won both in 2016 and 2017. This will be my third year participating and hopefully winning again. Preptober is for the more planner friendly people. Those who want to get a head start on their NaNoWriMo project. Typically this time can be used for creating characters, worlds, outlines, and so forth.

Now I consider myself more of a “planster”. This is typically a person who enjoys the perks of being a planner, mixed with someone who also enjoys flying by the seat of their pants in spontaneous writing. Admittedly though, the more I focus on novel writing the more I find myself leaning a bit further into the ‘planner’ spectrum.

One fabulous tool I’ll be using this year is author Natalia Leigh’s Preptober Workbook. She created one last year, which I had found extremely helpful in getting Collected started. When she announced she was going to make an updated version of the workbook this year, I jumped to purchase as soon as it was available. I printed mine out and already have added it to my project binder for Vini’s Story. I am officially starting to fill this out as of today!

…and yes, as you can see from the image above I did put my pages in protective sleeves. Why? Simply I’m weird like that. Although I have considered taking my pages to have them bound to be like an actual workbook, I like having all my stuff for this WIP (work in progress) organized together neatly in one place. I don’t want to have to worry about misplacing anything with vital information for the story.

So now I guess you could call this an impromptu faux-cover reveal. Below is the cover I created for my original plan of releasing Vini’s Story on WattPad. I have since (after writing two complete drafts and one partial), changed quite a bit of how this story is going to round out. Mostly due to the factthat Vini was actually a character I had created during my RPG (role playing game) days. I didn’t want to infringe on anyone else’s talent and thus there was a lot I had to revamp and change while still staying true to this character and her level of crazy.

For those who don’t know, Vini’s Story is a fictional autobiography of how a young rocker survived adolescence. Complete with absent parents, personal struggles, controversies, and her imaginary dead sister.

I am so excited to get started again in this project. Maybe it’s silly, but Vini was one of my favorite characters from back in the day. She’s definitely a muse that holds a special place for me and I am excited to get to write out her story in her words.

Are you planning to participate in NaNoWriMo this year? If so, do you do anything during Preptober to help prepare yourself for your project? Let me know in the comments below!

Also, if you are participating please feel free to ADD ME as a writing buddy on the NaNoWriMo website. I’ll happily add you back!

XOXO, Jane
