NaNoWriMo Snacks

Happy Halloween everyone!! This is absolutely my favorite holiday of all. This year it’s also the day I’ll be sharing the snacks and beverages I plan to keep on hand during the next thirty days. I mean, really what better day to share the food portion of my ‘NaNoWriMo Survival Kit’ than on the day of tricks and treats? So outside of any leftover Halloween candy, if you would like to know what sort of things I will use for added nourishment while I am in full on NaNoWriMo mode than definitely keep reading!

I’m again going to mention self-care here, because well let’s face it. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in what you’re doing that you can totally forget to do things like eat. As this is my third year participating in NaNoWriMo I have been discovering better ways to keep myself cared for as I prepare for a month of some intense writing sessions. Naturally nutrition plays a part in self-care and I know I’m guilty of ignoring hunger pains when I’m on a roll with my words. So snacks come in handy. Sometimes it’s just having little things that I can keep around my desk.

These things might include Nature Valley Granola Bites in flavors Peanut Butter Chocolate, Almond Butter Chocolate, and Almond Butter Toasted Coconut. I love to chill these in the refrigerator for a few hours at least before eating. I recently tried these and am hooked. I also like Nature Valley’s Soft Baked Squares in flavors Oatmeal Banana Bread & Dark Chocolate, Coco Peanut Butter, and Honey Peanut Butter.

Other things I might bring to my desk ahead of writing time are Good Thins brand Sweet Potato Crackers. I seriously love these. I love sweet potatoes in general, but these are the only chip like cracker I could eat on a regular basis. Speaking of crackers I also like plain animal crackers. Sometimes I will pair them up with little bites of chocolate, a smear of peanut butter, or even almond butter. I also like Graham Crackers with Peanut or Almond Butter as well!

Now one thing that is always found on my desk is Peanut M&Ms. It’s my sugary weakness I suppose. I even have a little M&M themed mug that I tend to keep filled with Peanut M&Ms. It’s parked next to my laptop so while I am in a focused moment of writing I can simply slip a hand over and pop a couple in my mouth. I also like to keep chocolate covered almonds next to me as well occasionally.

Fruit is another big deal for me this time around. I fortunately live in a household that consistently keeps fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. I love apples in the fall either on their own or with peanut butter. There is a ton of fruit I enjoy and will consume, but apples seem to always win me over this time of year.

Now as far as some cooler items on my menu options I do enjoy string cheese, low fat cottage cheese, and those Philadelphia brand Bagel Chips & Cream Cheese snack things. I do have to be very careful on how much of these I consume though as I do have a lactose allergy and dairy products don’t always mix well with me. Some things are kind of worth the struggle though…

Moving onto to beverages I recently tried Naked Juice. It’s an organic vegan juice and while I’m not vegan, I’m not opposed to trying products that fit the lifestyle in attempts to put healthier items in my overall diet. I like to start my mornings especially with a glass since I’m not a huge breakfast eater. I still feel like I’m getting some positive nutrition and the juices that I’ve tried thus far (Green Machine and Red Machine) are delicious!

Surprise, surprise, you know I’ve got hot tea on hand (hello, tea addicted writer here). I live in Michigan, it gets really cold and I like a warm beverage. Plus I just love tea. A personal favorite is Bigelow brand Salted Caramel, but earlier this month I also tried Yogi Brand tea in the flavor Honey Lavender which is their “stress reliever” tea. Oh my goodness it’s like heaven in a cup! I will definitely be alternating between these two most often depending on mood. Not to say I won’t drink other flavors, but these are the go to ones for me.

Another warm beverage of course is hot chocolate. Naturally I like to keep mini marshmallows on hand to go with, because coco and marshmallows just belong together.

The worst thing (for my health) that I will consume throughout November is Pepsi. I know, I know, pop is terrible for our bodies. It’s sugary, it causes bloating, along with a list of other things that aren’t great. I am a lifer with Pepsi though and while I have worked very hard over the course of this year to cut way back on my pop intake – I still drink it. I still love a nice cold can next to me while I am writing.

When it comes to cooler beverages I also have been much better about drinking a lot of water. Sometimes I do enjoy mixing in some Crystal Light on the go packs, especially in flavors Raspberry Green Tea, Raspberry Lemonade, and Peach Mango Green Tea.

I feel like I’m forgetting something here, but these really are the things I aim to keep on hand throughout the month to snack on in between meal times. Of course I plan to keep my meals as healthy as possible – and I really like to keep my snacking as light as possible. I’m presently working on getting myself healthier and in better shape (despite my love for Pepsi). I definitely find myself more conscious this year than previous on the things I put into my body. Yes I know, I should cut pop completely out, but if I do that I assure you I’ll relapse and drink it more than before… trust me, I’ve tried the cold turkey method with pop in the past.

What sort of snacks do you enjoy having around when writing? Or when doing whatever craft you are involved in? Do you try to find healthier snacks or go with what tastes best? Do you have any suggestions for good healthy snacks? Let me know in the comments below!

XOXO, Jane

  1. I drink tons of tea! I like Constant Comment black tea with orange. If it’s later in the evening I’ll switch to herbal, maybe chai or mint or vanilla flavored. Occasionally I’ll have green tea. Almost always I use a dash of whole milk and no sugar, but in green tea sometimes honey instead of milk. I don’t keep sugary snacks or crackers in my place cuz I’m trying to eat more protein. If I’m hungry when writing, I’ll have a piece of cheese or PB from a spoon.

    1. Green tea is good! I don’t usually add things into my tea, but when I do it is honey into certain hot teas. I haven’t tried Constant Comment, but I may have to look into checking it out. Tea is the best! PB is a great source of protein!
